What is GSM
Wikipedia says: "GSM (short for Global System for Mobile communications, originally from Groupe Spécial Mobile) is the most popular world standard of mobile communications. GSM services are used by over 2 billion people in more than 212 countries. The widespread GSM standard enables the simple hosting of the users in the networks of different operaters, which enables the use of GSM services on the large part of the globe. Contrary to the predecessor, GSM uses the digital speech and signalization transfer and with that represents the start of the second generation of mobile telephone systems (2G). The data communications and services are incorporated no sooner than in the third generation of mobile telephone systems (3G), which starts with the project "3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP).From the user' s point of view the key advantages of GSM system are higher digital quality of the sound and the possibility of sending short messages SMS (Short Message Service), which represents the acceptable alternative to the speech call as far as price is concerned. It offers to the mobile operaters the simple GSM integration and use of the different offerer's equipment, because the open standards force the manufacturers to compatibility between themselves. Similar to other cell standards the GSM enables the simple hosting of users in other networks, which accelerates the use and spreading of the GSM networks around the world. In spite of the development of the GSM standard and the new versions, also the compatibility with the older versions is mantained. For example, the possibility of the data package transfer was added in the version '97 with the technology GPRS. The higher speeds were specified with the technology EDGE in the version '99 of the GSM standard." More about GSM ...
